I Love the Way Life Plays Out Sometimes... (Koe no Katachi Chapter 8 Review)
Remember how Shouya had previously sold his stuff in order to get enough money to pay back his mom before he killed himself?
Well, since he's made the decision to keep living, now he no longer has a bike or even a futon to sleep on. So for today he borrows his mother's bike so he could get around town.
As he eats alone on the steps, Shouya happens to realize that there's someone else sitting alone. However, we can't see this mysterious stranger since his face is covered with an "X", BUT we do know that his name is Nagatsuka.
Shouya then later finds Nagatsuka getting bullied by another student in an attempt to take his bike. He decides to ignore it but then feels obligated to help when he and Nagatsuka make eye-contact. So Shouya ends up giving his bike to the classmate.
Aaand, classic bully move, the guy never returns the damn bike. Worst of all it was his mother's bike, so you know you're gonna get your ass kicked for something like that.
In his inner turmoil, Shouya begins to contemplate whether or not this is a sign saying he can't see Nishimiya (kinda broke my heart a bit ;-;)
So as he walks down the street he's suddenly stopped by a man handing out coupons for French bread and is suddenly reminded that Nishimiya is usually on bread-duty on Tuesdays.
MIND YOU, earlier he was looking for a reason to see Nishimiya without getting potentially slapped by her mother again!
And so our beloved Shouya ventures off to the Sign-Language class to see his childhood... acquaintance?
Anyway, like anyone who doesn't socialize very much Shouya was a complete utter mess when a little girl answers the door. He tells her what he's there for, as well as claiming to be Nishimiya's friend, yet the little girl tells him she's not there despite that he could clearly see her inside the classroom. Obviously this kid doesn't really like Shouya that much. I'm guessing it's most likely because she heard what he did to Nishimiya when they were kids OR Nishimiya's mom just told her to prevent him from coming inside. In the end, the kid asks him, "Are you really her friend," which instantly causes Shouya to be at a loss of words, leaving Shouya alone in the hallway.
He then again ponders just what exactly a friend is (kind of got me thinking too) as he walks back home, and in front of his house is Nagatsuka, the kid Shouya gave up his bike for earlier.
Turns out, Nagatsuka had been looking for Shouya's bike all day to give it back to him in return for the sacrifice he made to get the bully to leave Nagatsuka alone.
Throughout the chapter you see every other person (except for those he's associated with) with an "X" covering their faces meaning Shouya developed the habit of blocking out other people out of the bitterness and distrust he experienced since 6th grade. As soon as Nagatsuka tells him that he was looking for his bike, you see the "X" fall off to the floor only to finally reveal someone that Shouya had actually tolerated enough not to ignore (and a new friend!!).
It's funny how life ties things together, isn't it?
