3 Reasons Why I Believe Mikasa Isn't a "Mary Sue"

Like I said before, most people who hate Mikasa tend to argue the she's a Mary Sue.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this term (although almost everyone should know), a Mary Sue is a fictional character who's absolutely perfect in every conceivable way. This character is usually a woman and is perceived as "annoying' by most of the fandom.

What I'd like to point out are the traits that make her seem less "perfect". Mind you, I am in no way hating on Mikasa.

1. She's a little anti-social
I feel that throughout the series, Mikasa only talks to people when she feels like she has to. Kind of like the whole "Do no speak unless you are spoken to" thing. That's why sometimes it kind of looks like Eren and Armin are her only friends. However, I think she's gotten a bit closer to Sasha throughout the years, but that's most likely because Sasha initiated their conversations. Such as in their first meeting when Mikasa pretended to give Sasha her bread.

It makes sense to me for Mikasa to be less sociable, even in a cabin full of other people, because she's so used to having only Eren and Armin around. Remember how Armin's grandfather got drafted and died in battle? These three basically had to fend for themselves for a long time before finally signing up to join the military.

I also think another reason why she doesn't befriend anyone else is because she's so scared of losing them. She lives in a world where it literally isn't guaranteed you'll still be alive the next day, so maybe she feels that it's better to care for only a select few people so she doesn't have to deal with so much pain when their time comes.

2. A little too emotionally-attached to Eren
I mean, come on. The guy saved her life as a child!

I don't blame her for wanting to be around him so much. He's basically her best friend and they've been through hell and back together. However, she created her purpose to be to protect him in order to pay him back for what he did for her.

So in the situation where Eren dies, such as when she found out in the Battle of Trost, she becomes emotionally distraught and gets herself stuck. BUT, that was only one time. The only reason why she felt stuck during the Battle of Trost (and almost fed herself to a Titan) was because she felt as if it was way too soon for her. It was too much of a shock and led her to act without thinking, which was why she went on a titan-killing spree and ran out of gas.

But she learned from that experience. After that Eren was taken away almost three times (was it three? Somewhere around there) and she was upset, but she kept her head in place because she knew that acting the way she did before wasn't worth it. She already dealt with the pain of losing him, so it didn't hurt as much later on.

3. In the middle of battle, she doesn't pay attention to her surroundings
Despite how skillful she is, I've noticed that Mikasa isn't the best when it comes to paying attention to detail during battle. When she's focused on something, it's as if her other senses are shut off, kind of like that of a dog who's attacking an intruder.

For example, let's look at the scene where she gets caught by a Titan for the first time and gets her ribs crushed.

This happened because she decided to go ahead of everyone else like an asshole in order to get to Reiner and Bertoldt. However, she wasn't paying attention and got herself in trouble. If it weren't for Jean, who knows what else could've happened?

Same thing when Eren was taken by Annie in the Forest of Giant Trees. Had Levi not stepped in and pushed her out of the way, she would have most likely been crushed by Annie.

And this doesn't just occur when she's fighting Titans or when Eren was in danger.

For those of you don't read the manga, I suggest you get out right now. A very small spoiler is coming.

In this scene, Levi gets the squad to invade a building in order to capture and interrogate Dimo Reeves (the bald guy she's on top of). Mikasa succeeds in this and pins him down. However, she gets distracted which gave Reeves time to pull out a gun.

Thankfully, Sasha was hiding up on the roof and had saw the gun before Dimo had the chance to pull the trigger.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get across is that even though she's an extremely skilled soldier, Mikasa isn't perfect. Therefore she is far from being a "Mary Sue".
